Project Proposal:
Link is an opportunity for juniors at Animas High School to go above and beyond their comfort levels to experience new ways of learning. Not only does it broaden we students thought processes about the world but it allows us to work in an area we are interested in for the future. It is a great chance to discover ourselves, open our eyes, ears, and mind to adulthood. Plus it looks great on college applications.
Being a new junior at Animas High School this year I get the chance to broaden my perspectives and I chose to intern at Mercy Medical Regional Center right here in Durango, Colorado. At the hospital many fields of work are done- from basic physical check ups to general surgery. They have family doctors and individual work, and being a hospital they have at least over 100 fields of study to go into. Their mission is to keep people healthy and safe and make sure that they stay alive. Their job is to help the community in a way nobody else can. Mercy Medical contributes to our community by being one of the two hospitals in our community that we can take our loved ones and friends- sick, wounded, dying. To be able to do my internship however, I had to make sure I had a mentor. My mentors name is Doctor Michael McCallum and he is an anesthesiologist at Mercy. An anesthesiologist is a physician trained in anesthesia and pre-operative medicines. Interning with Michael will hopefully provide me with a better knowledge on what I want my future career to look like as well as what to look forward to, working in the medical field. I want to be able to help people and learn more about the sciences of medicine.
That being said I have a few goals set as they relate to my LINK internship. Academically I believe that studying higher levels of chemistry and anatomy as I move toward and through college will help me gain a better understanding of how the human body works. Interning with Mercy will move me towards this goal because it will allow me to experience what it is like providing medicine to the human body and in what part I will have to provide. Therefore, if I can take an anatomy class it will give me a better understanding of how that certain area functions and what the medicine will do there instead of just knowing thats where it goes. Personally, interning at Mercy would just achieve the goal of my happiness. There is nothing more I enjoy then helping people. Lastly, it will move me towards my career goals because it will help me discover if the medical field is for me or not. It will open me to what I enjoy about it and what I do not.
As for my project, I plan to do a research project that is primarily based off of complications that lead to death from anesthesia. This will manage to support the work of the business I’m working with because it lends to hospital or health care administration knowledge of the percentage of deaths from anesthesiology and actions they could take to prevent those deaths. It contributes to the global community as a whole because it decreases patient death which increases trust of the health care providers. In that way they get more service and bang for their buck, or in other words killing two birds with one stone. As I am sure I will not be fully learning about this at the hospital with my mentor, I hope to gain a better understanding of what to expect in the OR as well as general work environment. Something that I can pass onto others that want to do the same thing.
As part of getting prepared for my internship, I could use this research for my project towards my basic skills and understanding of the position I will be working under. If I am able to research the deaths as I plan to and also go into further depth with what types of anesthesia they are, it will give me room to have deeper conversations with my mentor. It will allow me to provide information to my mentor and get some back in return to understand this process better and work through my project more thorough.
Because I will be working at a hospital for my internship, the hours will be constantly changing as well as who I work with. There will be times where I work longer and get less free time, and then there will be times where I may only work for a few hours and have more time to do things. This way I will have mornings or evenings or breaks to go online and research what my project requires. However, if the problem arises that I do not have enough time to complete this project I will have to set up a schedule of steps to take to complete it by exhibition. The first step I would take is to talk to my mentor about things I could research and write it down in a notebook. The second step I would take is on breaks, or when at home do my research and write it down in this same notebook. To get my paper thoroughly set up and ready to go at exhibition, I will hopefully have enough weekend hours to refine my knowledge into a more professional setting. However, things are always changing and I do not know what I will be doing at this moment. The resources and materials I will use for this is my mentor, his colleagues, as well as the internet, and possibly peers and family as I have had a few in the medical field. I ensure that this project will be finished by the end of LINK with setting up a schedule and having time management and receiving help and feedback when I need it.
On the opposite hand of the project, setting up my LINK internship has ran into a few problems. One of the big problems being that because my mentor has multiple colleagues I will be working with as well. They did not all feel comfortable with having a student or minor in the OR to work as they have ran into issues in the past with ones son. I am not aware of the problems that arose but I do not that it took several weeks for Doctor McCallum to get back to my friend and I. Yet, I am not sure of how the problem was fixed as I found out through one of his colleagues who has been helping me with the process; but he convinced his partners to agree. Aside from that, getting paperwork in and filled out has been time consuming and I did fall behind, but I took the time to set aside and got it done. That is all for the problems I have faced.
Finally, I would like to go over my feelings about the LINK internship. I have never gone to or heard of a school who had a program as such, and when I did I was ecstatic to attend Animas. One of the many reasons being that it looks great on a college application and who doesn't want to be noticed? When I think about my internship and realizing that I am one student out of a very small population of others that get to do this, I feel lucky. Almost blessed. This is because it is setting up an environment for a student (minor, unprofessional) that allows them to grow into all that they are before the final stages of high school. Working in a serious environment gives the student the ability to experience adulthood, even if its just for a little bit and allows them to broaden their wants and needs and thoughts. Link is an opportunity for juniors at Animas High School to go above and beyond their comfort levels to experience new ways of learning. Broadening our structures and our knowledge could create the difference between what we excel in our not, and could be the ultimate decision in what colleges we can attend. We discover ourselves and other people. New people. New chances.

This is the completion of my project and what I decided to do was make a poster board about complications in anesthesia rather then write a research paper. My reasoning behind this is that it was a fun and more interesting as well as simple way to represent some of the things I learned while on LINK. There are three types of anesthesia: General, Local, and Regional. Each one is specific to what they can do in terms of sedation and pain. General anesthesia is one that will put you to sleep, Local anesthesia is to reduce sensation in a specific part of the body, and Regional anesthesia is typically in the back using a spinal or epidural in a system of nerves to numb you from the waist down.
